Título:  Abundancia y distribución de la tonina Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) en dos áreas del archipiélago Sabana-Camagüey, Cuba.

Resumo:  Entre los años 2000 - 2003 se evaluó la abundancia y distribución de delfines toninas en áreas del Archipiélago Sabana-Camagüey, específicamente en zonas adyacentes a Cayo Coco y en la zona norte de Matanzas. Se realizaron 12 salidas de campo, seis en cada área, recorriéndose un total de 2 007,8 millas náuticas, para un total de 322 h 79 min. Durante estas salidas se registraron cada 30 minutos variables oceanográficas a lo largo de transectos lineales y utilizando la técnica de fotoidentificación se cuantificaron los avistamientos de delfines, registrando el número de individuos, tamaño de grupo, la conducta y número de crías. Para el análisis se hizo una diferenciación por subzonas (5 subzonas), estaciones (lluvia y seca), y horario del día (mañana y tarde). La abundancia se calculó por la técnica de muestreo a distancia. En Matanzas, se observaron 253 delfines en 34 avistamientos, y 60 delfines fueron fotoidentificados. La abundancia relativa en esa área fue de 1,28 delfines/kmP 2 P. En Cayo Coco se realizaron 27 avistamientos de delfines, en los que se observaron 109 individuos, de los cuales 32 fueron individualizados. La abundancia relativa para esta área fue de 0.14 delfines/kmP 2 P. La mayor cantidad de delfines observados fue en la costa norte de las áreas estudiadas, lo que se relaciona con las condiciones oceanográficas y la disponibilidad de alimento. La distribución espacial y temporal de los delfines no pudo atribuirse a un solo factor determinante. El tamaño promedio de los grupos fue de 3,6 y 7,8 delfines y el porcentaje de crías constituyó el 11,9 % y el 18 %, en Cayo Coco y norte de Matanzas, respectivamente. El desplazamiento fue la conducta más observada en Cayo Coco (54%), y la alimentación (54%) lo fue en el norte de Matanzas. Los patrones conductuales mostraron una variación entre las áreas, la estación climática y la hora del día, según la región estudiada. En ninguna zona se pudo identificar una población residente, lo que brinda elementos de apoyo a la hipótesis de que en el Archipiélago Sabana-Camaguey exista una única población panmíctica, aunque la distribución no sea homogénea en toda el ecosistema. Este es el primer trabajo de su tipo en el país, que permitirá crear las bases cognoscitivas y metodológicas para futuros trabajos que se lleven a cabo en la región.
